Japan’s government has declared the covid-19 a state of emergency in Tokyo, three months before the Olympic Games opening ceremony, due to a new infections surge.
The government now feels as if they will not be able to contain the new mutated variants that have powerful infectious capabilities. Therefore they had to introduce a new covid-19 lockdown in Tokyo and three other cities namely Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo.
Businesses serving alcohol and major commercial facilities like shopping malls and department stores will be closed. The three affected regions will also bar spectators from sports events.
Government officials have insisted that the emergency measures will have no impact on the staging of the Olympic Games.
Yesterday Tokyo recorded 861 new infections, the last time the city recorded that figure was in January. Just over 1,5 million people have received their first shot and 827,000 have been fully vaccinated.
