Harare Amateur Swimming hosted their first event of the year this weekend at Chisipite Senior School. Highlands, Sharks, Harare Otters Swimming Cub, Pirates Zimbabwe, Dorado Swim Club, and Sparatans participated in the Harare Junior Championship.
Despite things being up in the air at the beginning of the year, Harare junior swimmers deferred all odds. Everyone was ready for a chance to race, this was the most exciting part. The junior swimmers were competing in 58 events in five styles namely freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, individual medley, and relays.
Daryl Chiyangwa, Ethan Donzva, Unathi Chibanda, Quinton Malandu, and Zuze Mazvitaishe played a pivotal role for Highlands. Donzva finished first in five events 50M backstroke, 50M breaststroke, 50M butterfly, 100M IM, and 50M freestyle.
Johnsen Alexis from Spartans also put up an amazing performance dominating and touching the wall first in five events 50M girls backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, and 100M IM. For finishing first in five events Donzva and Alexis each earned 60 point’s but it was Donzva’s Highlands that benefited the most.
After 54 competitive and exciting events Highlands were crowned as Champions of the Harare Junior Championship. The champions had a combined team score of 1175 whilst Pirates Zimbabwe was second with 429.5. Despite an impressive performance from their ladies team Spartans finished third with 400 points.
