As the Southern African region watched with anticipation Botswana sprinter Isaac Makwala took on the men 200m event at the FBK Games hopes of coming up tops. Tipped to win and redeemed are the exact word that explained what Makwala did today.
In his first race in Europe, the high-flying sprinter lived up to expectations outpacing and outshining the other seven sprinters in what looked like a very competitive.
Dutch sprinter Churandy Martins who was one of the favorites to win struggled and only managed to clock the 200m mark in 21.15 settling for 6th position.
Italian Eseosa Desalu looked like he was in control of the race but Botswana Isaac Makwala took over the lead from the home straight outpacing and outshining the Italian to finish the race in 20.03. Desalu followed close behind in 20.63.
Despite joining the party late French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre finished third in 20.79 his seasonal best. All four Dutch sprinters Taymir Burnet, Solomon Bockaire, Churandy Martina, and Onyema Adigida finished 4th, 5th,6th, and 7th respectively.
South African sprinter Luxolo Adams who won the race in 2018 pulled out of the race due to an injury. Makwala next race is on the 10th of June at the Diamond League in Florence.
