The Africa Individual Chess Championship has officially opened at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe, Malawi. Almost all the leading chess players in the continent are participating in the championships.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Youth and Sports in Malawi Honorable Ulema Msungama, President of Africa Chess, and President of Chess Association of Malawi along with current and veteran chess players.
In his, address Honorable Ulema Msungama implored the Chess Association of Malawi for working tirelessly to organize the event. He said the hosting of the games is in line with the aspiration of the State President Of Malawi Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the Tonse Alliance government of developing sports in the country.
Msungama also announced that his ministry has chosen the game of chess as the ‘ Malawi game’ during the Region 5 Under 20 Youth Games which they will host next year.
He also urged players and officials to uphold sports ethics and the principle of Ubuntu which promotes fair play.
The stakes at the African Individual Chess Championship are high with only the top four placed players in the open sections qualifying for FIDE World Chess Cup 2021. Egyptian players GM Ahmed Adly and Amin Bassmen are the top-seeded players in the men section whilst WGM Shahenda Wafa and WIM Sabrina Latreche are favorites in the women section.
Zimbabwe Chess Federation is being represented by Spencer Masango, Christine Makwena, and Kudzanayi Chirinda.
